Phased Array Architecture Analysis

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Modern commercial and military radar and communications systems use phased array antennas to enhance system performance. These systems are often called "smart antennas" when used for commercial wireless applications. The consultant analyzed a phased array architecture proposed by a client and performed an engineering analysis to identify technology and cost issues both of which are intricately tied to program success. Major subsystems, including radiating elements, T / R modules, beamformers, radome technology, and downconverters, were included in the analysis. A cost model was developed that isolated critical cost drivers for test-bed, prototype, and production quantities and recommendations were made to modify the array architecture to lower the system cost and improve manufacturability and maintainability without sacrificing electrical performance.
