Patent Work for Mobile Communications

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Mobile technologies have been enabled relatively recently by advances in microcontrollers, analog and digital circuit design. An entire ecosystem of algorithms and protocols enabling different forms of mobility, including continuous connectivity, synchronization and reachability have been developed and, of course, patented.

In this case, the client attempted to patent a specific mechanism of synchronizing data from mobile devices and encountered serious difficulties from the US Patent office, pointing at several pieces of prior art. The main problem here was to separate the parts of the patent application that were truly novel, while clearly delineating the gaps in the prior art, a task far from trivial due to the many subtle nuances involved in mobility mechanisms (usually implemented as part of complex communication systems).
