Papermill Shutdown

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

A large papermill was in the process of undergoing a forced unplanned shutting down due to leaking 2,000 psi/2,000F superheat steam from a control valve packing. The normal planned shutdown was three months in the future. After inspecting the valve, the expert suspected a bent valve stem and recommended a temporary fix that allowed the papermill to resume full paper production, plus electricity production and sales, until their normal planned shutdown. At the shutdown, the papermill maintenance discovered a bent valve stem, but, at the expert's suggestion, had procured a new valve stem and was at the ready with the replacement part on hand, removing a potential shutdown critical path item and shortening their downtime.
