Life Sciences Due Diligence
A private equity firm was evaluating the purchase of a company that produced laboratory grade reagents for life sciences research and required a due-diligence analysis of the relevance of the company's product catalog. In particular, the company marketed two product groups targeted at two specific areas of cell biology. Ultimately, the private equity firm needed an evaluation of the importance of these areas in biomedical research and whether these areas would be likely to expand or contract over time. Because the timeline for the acquisition was short, final written reports of the results of the analysis were required within two weeks of contacting this expert.
We assembled a team of two biomedical researchers with expertise in molecular and cellular biology to evaluate the relative importance of the research areas represented by the two primary product lines. This expert carried out a quantitative analysis of the volume of published biomedical research and federal grant funding for the two key product lines. They identified key research leaders in each area and conducted interviews to assess their impression of the future viability of the specific product areas. Their findings were compiled in a written report detailing the quantitative and qualitative analyses, and incorporated summary evaluations based on the experts' opinions.
