Cleanroom Training and Conceptual Design

An east coast NASA installation required a clean facility within which space vehicles were to be assembled. The requirement was for an 80 foot tall building, rated at Class 10000. The contract design firm had minimal cleanroom experience and both the design firm and NASA representatives felt additional technical assistance would be useful. This consultant was engaged to present a one day course on cleanroom design and operation to a joint committee of NASA and design firm members. The thrust of the presentation, in addition to increasing the cleanroom knowledge of all participants, was to address design issues of the proposed facility and help establish conceptual design criteria.

This consultant created a one day course, presented it to the joint committee and assisted in devising a conceptual design approach for the clean facility. The recommended approach called for a horizontal flow cleanroom, with strata of different air velocities as determined by the activities carried out on the space vehicles at various elevations within the clean facility. This consultant assisted the design team in identifying appropriate filtration devices and reviewed the design drawings as they were developed to insure that typical cleanroom protocols were followed. He also participated in developing a test specification for the completed facility, assisted in the selection of materials of construction and advised on the design of the air supply and air return walls. The experience brought to the design team and end users by this consultant instilled the necessary confidence in all parties to facilitate timely submittal of a satisfactory design to the construction team.
