Biomedical Container Solution

While in the employ of a major Biomedical Corporation this consultant was asked to help a fellow engineer with one of his projects as merely an adviser during a brainstorming session. His problem was a plastic container filled with fluid of an aqueous nature that had a heat sealed spin cap attached to the top sealing the contents from exposure until ready for use in medical applications.

The problem was, when the container was to be used a twisting of the top cap enabled the liquid to escape from the container. Everything worked fine until approximately 30 to 70 percent of the liquid was left in the container, then the container would begin to collapse disabling the remainder of the liquid to expel its contents. Since the cap remained in tact this consultant suggested a boss be configured on the inner surface of the cap and a second boss with a frangible membrane be affixed to the surface of the container such that when the cap is unscrewed to allow flow from the container the cap boss engages the frangible boss creating an opening to allow air to displace the expelling liquid.

Naturally a hydrophobic filter had to be added to assure the displacement air was "clean". Nonetheless this concept was proven to work and the product made entry into a very lucrative market ahead of schedule.
